W R I T I N G S:
Meaning Of Education
Education is defined as the teaching and training of people, especially in schools and an educated person is defined as someone who have studied and learnt a lot of things to a high standard. Though these definitions of education make sense in terms of language, what do they really mean?
Education can be broken up into different aspects, mainly social education, moral education and the type of education that we receive in schools. To be a truly educated person not only means that you have mastered every single subject that you have taken up in your school, neither does it only mean that you have become a genius and may know every single fact and figure in the world. This is a complete misconception. To be a truly educated person means that you have excelled in all abovementioned three aspects of education, and not just what you have learnt in your road to knowledge.
Firstly, let me elaborate on the type of education we receive in schools, which forms the majority of the whole system of education. The main reason why people have to be educated it to make them more up to date with the rapidly changing society. The education of people also leads to the rapid development of a certain country as more people get equipped with skills that they require for certain industries and in turn, aid the industry to grow, generating more income for the country as a whole. This aspect of education is what the majority of us have, as average literacy rates have drastically increased in the world in the past century.
Although having a good academic record may raise a person’s status and enable him to apply for a job, what else does it do? Although people may know and remember everything they has studied, do they even know how they can apply it to their daily lives? Having knowledge is one thing. However, one must also have the ability to apply their knowledge to everyday situations and analyse them to greater detail. Only people who can do all these efficiently can be considered a truly educated person. There is absolutely no point in having a good education if people just absorb every information like a sponge, but just let them sit in your head without any use. Though the saying goes, “Knowledge is power”, but a physics theory also mentions that power cannot be found when work has not be done. Hence, a truly educated person not only takes in facts that they have learnt from their lessons, but is also someone who will be willing to go the extra mile to examine them in greater depth and in turn, apply their knowledge to their everyday situations.
The next aspect of education is social education, which is important as it is human nature to have the need for friends. Humans have the tendency to mingle around and are constantly getting to know more people throughout their entire lives. How are they able to do this without any social education? A person would also have to excel in this aspect for them to be considered a truly educated person. In today’s modern society, people whom are anti-social are usually shunned and ignored, especially at the work place. These people are seldom respected as they lack the social skills to communicate effectively. Hence, having a good social education is important for a person to be successful in life. Furthermore, having a good social education would also mean a better social life, which leads to further emotional development and also the exchange of new concepts and ideas.
It is no use to excel in your academic pursuits when you have a tendency to be a loner. It is always good to cultivate a good social lifestyle from young, and slowly improve as the years go by. Thus, a truly educated person would be someone who can communicate with their fellow men effectively and transfer their ideas and knowledge more efficiently. Truly educated people, who have had a good social education would also have a tendency to be happier compared to people who lack skills in this area, thus leading to a less stressed lifestyle and a healthier social lifestyle.
Lastly, a truly educated person must also be someone with good morals. Morals is a wide subject covering various aspect such as National Education, manners, etiquette, family matters and the likes. A truly educated person should always be aware of what is going on around him, and to also treat other people with the same respect as they have shown him. An uneducated person with good morals would surely be better off than an educated person without morals as a person without good morals would seldom be pleasant to associate with. Similarly, a good moral education should also be cultivated from young, thus making them “in built” and embedded deep beneath.
A very important aspect if moral education is “humility”. Though a person may be intellectual and excel in all forms of academic education, one should always learn to be humble. People are always learning and gaining from new experience as they live each day of their life and hence, there is truly no such thing as “knowing everything in the world”. A person will not be considered as truly educated if they excel in their academic pursuits and social skills but fail to be humble. A swollen-headed person would definitely not be respected and would be looked down upon, no matter how good his/her academic record is.
In conclusion, a truly educated person should aim to be an all-rounder in the various aspects of education, mainly academic, social and moral education. Only if a person is equipped with these carious forms of knowledge will they be ready to face the challenges that life will bring to them.
This further supports my stands against the MoE. See, even 17 year olds also agree with me
